Symptoms of Adrenal Insufficiency

Return to Home Page  Return to Symptoms Page

Adrenal insufficiency symptoms can be somewhat non-diagnostic. Patients can have fatigue, lose weight, develop dizziness, and have abdominal pain. Sometimes adrenal insufficiency is associated with recent steroid use (i.e. prednisone or dexamethasone). Sometimes people can develop skin hyperpigmentation. The diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency can be suspected in patients with hypotenstion and abdominal pain with hyperkalemia, eosinophilia, and hyponatremia. The diagnosis is confirmed with the cortrosyn stimulation test.

There are many causes of adrenal insufficiency. Classically, adrenal insufficiency is associated with tuberculosis. It is associated with metastatic cancer, adrenal hemorrhage, sudden discontinuation of steroids, autoimmune disorders, and overwhelming infection.

Adrenal insufficiency is generally treated with steroid replacement.
