Aortic dissection occurs when there is tear in the aorta. Aortic dissection is often related to atherosclerosis. Aortic dissection is a life-threatening event and is characterized by a sudden tearing discomfort in the abdomen or chest radiating to the back.

Aortic dissection can also be associated with chest pain, weakness, dizziness, abdominal pain, or a loss of kidney function. This can develop over a short period of time and can be associated with loss of consciousness, and even death.
