Answers to Cancer Questions

Cancer is characterized by abnormal and unregulated cell growth. Uncontrolled cell division and growth leads to cell accumulation and tumor growth. Some areas of the body are more commonly involved, but essentially any area of the body can become cancerous.

Metastasis occurs when the cancer spreads outside of the organ of origin. Cancer prognosis depends on several factors. The natural history of specific cancers can predict general expectations. Staging with the TNM (tumor, Nodes, Metastasis) method can allow cancers to be placed into stages (I-IV) In general the prognosis is better for stage I and II cancers when compared to stage III and IV cancers.

At the time of diagnosis, patients often only have cancer questions. Why did this happen? What is the treatment? What do I do? These answers can best be supplied by the patient's physician. Specific information is generally needed to provide all the answers to cancer questions.
