Cause of Down Syndrome

The cause of Down syndrome is related to trisomy of chromosome 21. The risk of Down syndrome is increased as maternal age increases.

The specific cause of Down syndrome resulting from trisomy 21 is not completely understood, but it appears that it is related to non-disjunction of chromosome 21.

Down syndrome occurs in approximately 1 in 700 births. It is more common in males, and is diagnosed at birth.
