The cause of arthritis cannot always be determined. Arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the joints.

The differential diagnosis for the cause of arthritis also includes gout, trauma, hemarthrosis, bursitis, lupus, polymyalgia rheumatica, cancer, endocrine disorders, avascular necrosis, and injury.
