Smoking and chewing tobacco are a common cause of bad breath.

Medical conditions that can be a cause of bad breath include bowel obstruction, bronchiectasis, viral illness, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and gastrocolic fistulas.

Gingivitis, hepatic encephalopathy, ketoacidosis, lung abscess, periodontal disease, and pharyngitis can all cause bad breath.

Kidney failure, sinusitis, and Zenker’s diverticulum can be a cause of bad breath.
