Cause of Cold Sores

 



The herpes simplex virus is the cause of cold sores. There are two types of herpes simplex type I and type II. Herpes simplex type one is the most common cause of cold sores, however Type II can also be a cause of cold sores. Herpes simplex type II tends to cause genital herpes, however, type I can also cause genital herpes.

To prevent the cause of cold sores, people should avoid contact with an infected people.

Cold sores are extremely common. About 2/3 of patients infected with herpes simplex type I will actually develop cold sores.

Fever, cold temperature, ultraviolet sun light, sunburn, emotional stress, nerve injury, or abrasions can reactivate herpes simplex to cause cold sores.
