Cause of Constipation

 



The cause of constipation is sometimes difficult to determine.

The cause of constipation, can be related to multiple factors including medications, thyroid disorders, autonomic neuropathy, diet, electrolyte disorders, or colon cancer.

Diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, cirrhosis, diabetic neuropathy, anorectal abscess, anal fissure, hypercalcemia, and porphyria can all be a cause of constipation.

Hypothyroidism, intestinal obstruction, irritable syndrome, mesenteric ischemia, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord trauma, ischemic colitis, and ulcerative colitis can cause constipation.

Drugs known to cause constipation include narcotic pain medications, chemotherapy, such as vincristine and alkaloids, calcium channel blockers, antacids, anticholinergics, and excessive laxative use.

Fecal impaction can be another cause of constipation. If constipation is progressively getting worse, or is associated with blood in stool, it should be evaluated by your health care provider. The cause of constipation, should always be determined when possible.
