Cause of Diabetes

 



The cause of diabetes is generally related to either decreased insulin production or resistance to insulin. The cause of type I diabetes, results from decreased insulin production from the pancreas.

The cause of type II diabetes is related to insulin resistance in the peripheral tissues.

Whether decreased insulin production or increased resistance, diabetes results in elevated glucose levels. It is thought that the cause of type I diabetes, results from antibodies islet cell antigens glutamic acid decarboxylase.

The exact cause of type II diabetes is not known however, but certain risk factors are understood. People with a strong family history of type II diabetes or obesity are increased risks.
