Cause of Hemophilia

Hemophilia is an inherited disorder that results from decreased levels of factor VIII (hemophilia A) or decreased levels of factor IX (hemophilia B).

The cause of hemophilia is related to an X-linked gene, therefore only males generally can be affected.

Mild hemophilia A is caused by a deficiency in factor VIII which results in > 5% factor VIII activity.

Severe hemophilia A is caused by a deficiency in factor VIII which results in less than 1% factor VIII activity.
