Cause of Leukemia


The cause of leukemia is not entirely understood. There are many different types of leukemia including acute lymphoblastic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, and hairy cell leukemia.

The cause of leukemia in some patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia is related to exposure to chemotherapy agents or radiation.

The cause of leukemia in patients with acute myelogenous leukemia is thought to be related to previous exposure to chemotherapy, chromosomal changes, radiation and myeloproliferative disorders.

The cause of leukemia in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia is unknown.

The cause of leukemia in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia is related to the Philadelphia chromosome.

This is an abnormality characterized by a translocation between chromosome 9 and chromosome 22. The cause of leukemia in patients with hairy cell leukemia is unknown.
