Cause of Shingles


The cause of shingles is a reactivation of the Varicella virus, specifically known as Varicella zoster. The Varicella virus is also the cause of chickenpox.

The cause of shingles is generally a reactivation of the virus, which lies dormant in the dorsal root ganglia.

Acute infection with varicella does not cause shingles.

Patients can develop chickenpox, after exposure to someone with shingles.
