Cause of Alzheimer’s

 



The cause of Alzheimer’s is not known. Alzheimer’s disease is characterized by loss of abilities involving memory, judgment, and abstract thinking.

Abnormalities associated with chromosomes 1, 12, and 14 have been associated with Alzheimer’s dementia. Approximately 5% of people at age 70 will develop Alzheimer’s dementia.

Approximately 20% of people at aged 80 will develop Alzheimer’s dementia. Approximately 50% of people at age 90 will have Alzheimer’s dementia. Although the cause of Alzheimer’s is not known, it often occurs in patients with Down’s syndrome who are over 35 years old.
