Many factors can cause blood in the urine. Perhaps the most common cause of blood in the urine is a urinary tract infection. Trauma to the bladder or urethra can also cause blood in the urine. Kidney stones also can cause blood in the urine. Blood in the urine is also known as hematuria, and it may be a sign of a more serious underlying diagnosis such as bladder cancer. The medical causes of blood in the urine include appendicitis, cortical necrosis, cystitis, diverticulitis, endocarditis, glomerular nephritis, nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease, prostatic hyperplasia, prostatitis, pyelonephritis, kidney cancer, and kidney infarction. Renal papillary necrosis, kidney trauma, renal tuberculosis, renal vein thrombosis, schistosomiasis, sickle cell anemia, lupus, and trauma to the urethra can all be a cause of blood in the urine. Vaginitis and vasculitis can also be a cause of blood in the urine. Anticoagulants, aspirin, analgesics, cyclophosphamide, rifampin, penicillin, and thiobendazole can also cause blood in the urine. Blood in the urine should not be ignored, and the cause should be determined by medical evaluation. |
