Cause of Breast Cancer

The cause of breast cancer in most patients cannot be determined. Patients with a strong family history of breast cancer may have an underlying genetic predisposition.

The most common inherited genetic cause of breast cancer is the BRCA 1 gene. Although the BRCA 1 gene is the most common genetic cause of breast cancer, it accounts for less than 5% of all breast cancers. It can be the cause of breast cancer in up to 10% of women who develop breast cancer before the age of 35.

Patients with the BRCA 2 gene abnormality or patients who have mutations in the P53 gene found on chromosome 17 are also increased risk of breast cancer. The specific cause of breast cancer in most patients cannot be determined.
