Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy symptoms are characterized by neurologic abnormalities. Most patients are diagnosed by a neurologist.

Developmental delay is common. Sometimes cerebral palsy symptoms can include seizures and mental retardation. Patients will often experience difficulty learning, poor coordination, and muscle rigidity.

The most common type of cerebral palsy is associated with spasticity (an increase in muscle tone due to hyperexcitability of the stretch reflex). Children may develop athetosis (involuntary writhing movements particularly of the arms and hands). Sometimes cerebral palsy symptoms can include seizures, memory loss, and a poor short-term memory.

Other cerebral palsy symptoms may be characterized by atony (lack of muscle tone) or hypotonia (decreased muscle tone). Abnormal posture and tremor are common.
