Diphtheria symptoms occur in people infection with the Corynebacterium diphtheria. Diphtheria symptoms generally involve the upper respiratory system where the infection often occurs.

Diphtheria symptoms may include a sore throat and difficulty swallowing. Other people develop shortness of breath and swelling of the neck.

People generally will have fever and other signs of systemic infection. Other symptoms often include headache and a racing heartbeat.

Although diphtheria was once extremely common in the United States, today the United States is down to 2-10 cases per year.
