The United States Medical Licensing Examination was introduced back in the early 1990’s by the NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).  The USMLE allows for standardization of medical students across the country and the world.  The scores are important in the medical residency matching procedure.

The USMLE has three steps.  USMLE Step 1 was designed to determine if a medical student can distinguish the fundamentals of basic science and apply that knowledge to the understanding of medicine.  USMLE Step 2 is intended to determine if the applicant can apply medical knowledge, skills and understanding of clinical science essential for satisfactory patient care.  USMLE Step 3 determines the overall ability of the applicant to understand clinical science and apply it to the medical care of a patient.
