Herpes symptoms are caused by the herpes simplex virus.

Herpes is extremely common. Often this disease is asymptomatic. Genital herpes symptoms can include pain and itching that occur 2-5 days after exposure. People can develop blisters at the site of infection. The blisters can be painful and develop into open sores that can last up to two weeks.


Other herpes symptoms include fever, malaise, and headache. About 50% of people who become infected will develop recurrent herpes outbreaks.


The recurrent symptoms will generally last about a week and can be associated with stress, menstrual periods, and infection.
