Iron deficiency anemia symptoms generally consist of those symptoms also seen in patients with other anemias. Iron deficiency symptoms may include fatigue, weight loss, and shortness of breath with exertion.

Sometimes people experience dizziness. Iron deficiency anemia develops because of blood loss. Often blood loss occurs over a long period of time.

In postmenopausal women and men blood loss most commonly occurs through the GI tract. Postmenopausal women and men with iron deficiency anemia should have the GI tract and evaluated in all circumstances.

Other symptoms of iron deficiency may include soreness of the tongue, sores at the angle of the mouth, weight loss, and blood in stool.

Sometimes people will develop pica, characterized by abnormal fondness of certain substances such as ice, clay, or starch.
