Symptoms of Kidney Infection

Return to Home Page  Return to Symptoms Page

Kidney infection symptoms generally occur when a simple urinary tract infection ascends to involve the kidney.

Kidney infection symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, weakness, flank pain, pain with urination, blood in the urine, and fever.

Other associated kidney infection symptoms include the need for frequent urination, incontinence of urine, supra-pubic pain, and generalized malaise.

In elderly people, the typical symptoms may not occur. There has to be a high degree of suspicion when there is a change in mental status or confusion in an elderly person, because these infections are so common.

When infection involves the nephrons and tubules of the kidney it is referred to as pyelonephritis.
