Mitral stenosis symptoms occur when the valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle becomes scarred down resulting in decreased blood flow. This is known as mitral stenosis.

The primary symptoms of mitral stenosis include shortness of breath at rest and with exertion. People often develop orthopnea, characterized by shortness of breath when lying down.


People develop cough productive of frothy phlegm. Other symptoms of mitral stenosis include lower extremity swelling, weight gain, and chest pain.


Mitral stenosis symptoms include an atrial fibrillation, congestive heart failure, and the development of a murmur.
