Pregnancy Hemorrhoids

Pregnancy hemorrhoids are common. Pregnancy related hemorrhoids develop because the enlarging uterus impedes return of blood from the lower extremities and pelvis. This occurs as the uterus pushes on the veins in this area. Pregnancy hemorrhoids are often mild and can be treated with over the counter remedies. In one Spanish study, hemorrhoids were present in 8% of women at the beginning of pregnancy and 53% in the postpartum period.
