The curative and therapeutic effects of chemotherapy are improving and current technology is allowing more targeted therapies to be developed. Drugs such as Gleevec and Rituximab are examples of this technology.
Despite these advances however, chemotherapy, even in combination with other treatment modalities is not always curative. Chemotherapy has potential side effects, which sometimes outweigh the potential benefits. The decision to take chemotherapy is personal and ultimately the patient with cancer must make the decision after hearing the potential pros and cons of chemotherapy.
