Thalassemia is a disorder of the hemoglobin production. People may develop beta thalassemia or alpha thalassemia depending on which chain of the hemoglobin production is involved.

Thalassemia symptoms depend on the degree of anemia associated with the underlying thalassemia. Some thalassemia symptoms may be associated with anemia and characterized by shortness of breath, fatigue, and generalized malaise.

Sometimes people can develop an enlarged spleen with associated discomfort in the abdomen.

Other symptoms of a thalassemia include gallstones, fractures, jaundice, and impaired growth.
