Underactive Thyroid - Overactive Thyroid

Common symptoms of underactive thyroid include fatigue, weight gain, forgetfulness, and depression. People can develop thinning and coarsening of the hair, dry skin, drooping eyelids, slowed speech, and facial swelling.

Other underactive thyroid symptoms include constipation, numbness of the hands and feet, feeling cold when others are not, and increased menstrual bleeding.


Overactive thyroid symptoms include anxiety, palpitations, and weight loss. Other common overactive thyroid symptoms include difficulty sleeping, irritability, thinning of the hair, tremor, and weakness.


Additional overactive thyroid symptoms include protrusion of the eyes (proptosis), swelling around the eyes (periorbital edema), increased sweating, heat intolerance, and palpitations. Sometimes people can develop fatigue, changes in menstrual periods, confusion, and goiter.
