Cause of Alcoholism

 



The cause of alcoholism is most often due to many different factors. There appears to be some genetic influence in the cause of alcoholism, however, there are other social and medical factors involved.

Alcoholism is characterized by impairment of social and occupational functioning associated with alcohol consumption. Approximately 5-7% of the US population will develop alcoholism at some point.

Alcoholism can be associated with gastrointestinal bleeding, alcoholic liver disease, alcohol withdrawal, peripheral neuropathy, delirium tremens, nutritional compromise, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, esophageal varices, memory loss, anemia, hangover, as well as a multitude of social effects.
