Peritonitis symptoms occur because of inflammation of the peritoneum.

Peritonitis symptoms can be an indication of a serious underlying condition. Peritonitis symptoms are characterized by severe abdominal pain. Usually the patient can point with a finger to the single location of pain.

Peritonitis symptoms can be associated with fever. Usually the symptoms will be increased with pain, therefore the patient will want to lie extremely still. People may have swelling of the abdomen. Sometimes peritonitis will be associated with a rigid and firm abdomen.

The other associated peritonitis symptoms will depend on the underlying cause.
